How to connect two computers with Ethernet cables with different operating systems
For homes or small businesses, connecting two or many computers can be an excellent way to share data fastly. This article explains how you can connect two computers with different computer operating systems. Note these instructions create a private network with only two devices. What is private network and how it work.
1. Insert an Ethernet cable. If you want to connect two computers that do not have access to the shared network. Then you can use an Ethernet cable to connect the Ethernet ports of the two computers directly.
Some computers require a special cable, called a “crossover cable“. “This is a special cable for reverse routing. The Ethernet port has input and output where crossed cables are exchanged. So that the output from one computer is connected to the input from another computer.
Many current computers do not need a crossover cable: they use an automatic cross-media-related interface (Auto-MDIX) and automatically configure the Ethernet port.
The most recently manufactured Macintosh computers do not need a crossover cable.
If you are unsure, consult your documentation to see what your system needs. If you do not have a crossover cable, just use a crossover cable: the auto-sensing Ethernet port works with crossover cables and standard cables.
The crossover cable is also called twisted pair Ethernet cable.
How to connect two computers with Windows Vista, 7 or 8
1. Connect two computers with a crossover cable. At least one computer that connects must use Windows Vista, 7 or 8.
2. Open the Network Center. If you want to connect computers running Windows 7 and Windows Vista, use Windows 7 to perform these tasks.
Click on the Start button and then on Control Panel. Type “network” in the search box and then click “Network and Sharing Center“.
3. Select your network on the network folder at the top of the Network Center, double-click the unrecognized network icon.
If there are multiple networks then the icon is called different networks.
4. Switch on network detection. If network discovery and file sharing are disabled, click the information bar in the network that contains the following message. Network discovery and file sharing are disabled. Computers and network devices are not visible. Click to change … and then click Network discovery and file sharing. If you are prompted to enter an administrator password or confirmation, enter the password or confirm if necessary.
Note: If one of the computers is running Windows XP, it may take some time before it appears in the network window. You may need to configure your XP computer as described below.
For Windows 8.1 and 10
1. Open the Control Panel, choose Control Panel or Settings from the Start menu, and then select Control Panel.
2. Double-click on “System” and select the “Device Name” tab. Enter the name of each computer and the name of the workgroup. The name of

3. Configure a network connection. In the Control Panel, double-click Network Connections, and then connect the computer with a crossover cable.
If the status of a machine is displayed as “not connected”, the cable is not properly installed or broken.
4. Enable file sharing, right-click the network connection icon and select Properties. Click on the Advanced tab and then on Windows Firewall settings.
In the Windows Firewall Settings window, click the Exceptions tab and ensure that Printer and File Sharing are selected.
It may take a while for the computer to obtain an IP address and appear in the Network Connections window.
Note: If you connect two computers with Windows XP, you must complete the above steps for both computers.
How to connect two computers with Macintosh operating system.
1. Tie them up and connect the Ethernet cable from an Ethernet computer in one port to an Ethernet computer in another port.
If you do not have an Ethernet port, you can also use a USB to Ethernet adapter.
2. Set network preferences. On each computer in the Network Preferences panel, select View the network port settings and make sure that the built-in Ethernet is selected.
If Ethernet is active, this appears in the Network Status panel of the Network System Preferences panel.
3. Enable sharing, open the sharing preferences panel on one of the machines, and enable sharing of personal files. Note the address of the computer, shown here as “AFP: // 192. 168. 0. 2” (AFP stands for Apple File Protocol).
4. Set up a second computer.
In the Finder window in OS X 10.3 or higher, click the network icon in the side bar.
Once everything is loaded, find the name of the first computer you set up and click on it.
You may be asked to enter your password.
Another dialog box appears with all available volumes. Select one or all and the icon appears as a partition in the sidebar.
How to Use a Macintosh computer as a server
1. Share the computer as a server, with the advantage that the icon of the other computer’s drive appears as a volume on the desktop.
2. Select Connect to server from the Go menu.
A dialog box appears with a list of favorite servers. If the IP address of the destination computer is not displayed in the list, click Browse or type the IP address of the destination computer in the Server Address field.
3. Click on “Connect” and the password dialog box will appear. Enter the information if necessary.
A dialog box appears with the volume selection on the target Mac. Once the icons appear on the desktop, treat them like any other unit.
